Bayonne Bridge Approach Spans Investigation

The new approach spans of the Bayonne Bridge in New York are made of concrete segmental box girders. Cracks had been found in the these newly erected concrete segments. CHI, as a sub-consultant to HDR, investigated the causes of the cracks and developed mitigation recommendations.

Detailed finite element modeling and analysis, as well as strut-and-tie models, were utilized for the investigation. Probable causes of cracking were evaluated for each type of crack. In the end, the causes of all types of cracks were identified with high confidence, and mitigation measures were proposed.
