Throgs Neck Bridge - Replacement of Deck in the Suspended Spans

This project involved the replacement of the 60-year-old grid deck in the suspended spans, towers, and anchorages of the bridge. Joint leakage, out-of-plane bending, and fatigue led to cracking in the stringers, which must be replaced along with the deck. Two options, an orthotropic deck and a continuous “floating” grid deck, were proposed as the most cost effective solutions, and the orthotropic deck was selected as the option for final design. A wind evaluation, including extensive wind tunnel testing, was undertaken to ensure that the structure would remain stable after the new deck system was installed.

The project also included the replacement of finger joints, installation of a new fire standpipe, new roadway lighting, and an evaluation of the suspenders.

CHI performed construction support services on this project, and the work included:

  • Responses to RFIs during deck fabrication.

  • Shop drawing reviews.

  • Staged construction analysis.

  • Final design drawings for the main cable inspection and suspender replacement.
